Board of Supervisors Adopts New Maps for Supervisorial Districts
December 14, 2021
Following several weeks of public hearings and reviewing 38 versions of district maps, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors today adopted new lines for the elected supervisors’ districts.
Hours of public comment were heard during five public hearings, along with numerous written comments providing feedback on the redistricting process and draft maps. Revisions were made to draft maps based on input provided by community members.
The final map approved by the Board of Supervisors last week and adopted today is fully compliant with the Federal Voting Rights Act and the California Fair Maps Act. Through rigorous statistical analyses by well-respected experts and consultants, the county ensured that all voters have a meaningful opportunity to elect the candidates of their choice. These analyses included citizen voting age population data, racially polarized voting analysis and an opportunity to elect report.
The final map, which has at least two effective Latino opportunity-to-elect districts, was achieved as a result of the months-long effort to ensure that Riverside County residents have fair and equal representation, in accordance with all applicable laws.
“The county and the community worked through an incredible amount of data, reports and feedback – all within an extremely shortened timeframe due to a delay by the federal government,” said Board Chair Karen Spiegel, second district supervisor. “Thank you to all who participated in the process. The work of county government touches the daily lives of our residents and the fair and equal representation of how this work is governed is vitally important.”
The new district lines will go into effect for Districts 2, 4 and 5 following the 2022 election, in which the elected supervisor will take office in Jan. 2023. For Districts 1 and 3, the new boundaries will go into effect following the 2024 election, and the elected supervisor will take office in 2025. As a result, during the elections held in 2022 and 2024, voters will vote according to the new adjusted boundary lines.
